That column is very troubling if it is accurate. It is normal for a candidate to say whatever they think the Senators want to hear. Ashcroft seems to have gone beyond that. Will most Democrat Senators give him a pass? After all, Ashcroft is a former Senator and apparently he was well liked by his colleagues. The Senate has been called one of the most exclusive clubs on Earth and there is a great deal of deference shown by members of the club to each other.
With the Senate split 50/50, if just one or two Republican Senators speak out against Ashcroft before the vote on him, Shrub may be forced to withdraw his nomination.
