01/28/01: Saw this movie last night...

Not as great as I thought it would be, but quite enjoyable. It works better when it is showcasing the life and social workings in a redneck town, than when it is concentrating on the mystery aspect. It's something like if you crossed "A Simple Plan" and "Sling Blade" with "The Sixth Sense" (and perhaps "What Lies Beneath", since there is a similar scene involving a bath tub) and "The Eyes of Laura Mars", or any other suspense thriller about somebody with ESP. So, you can feel the touch of Raimi (in his restrained style) and Thornton, and you can tell what they feel more comfortable with. But the southern gothic scenes do work...

On to answering questions you may have:

-Cate Blanchett IS excellent in her role, and deserves an Oscar nomination, although not a win this time.

-Keanu Reeves does pull off the redneck bit quite well, although nothing great. His accent is nothing like his atrocious southern accent in "The Devil's Advocate". Recall that Reeves has played white trash before, quite effectively, in fact, in "River's Edge".

-Yes, my masturbating friends: Katie Holmes does show off her breasts, more than once in fact.

-The killer's identity is predictable.

-There are no "Evil Dead" style excesses. But there is a lot of violence, blood, corpses, ghosts, and what not.

Additional note: the score is quite good...

Rating: *** out of ****.
