08/04/03: That's not true.

I dislike the idea of "converting" anyone in a movie because the concept is simple-minded. I mean, does anyone really think that, with enough prodding, they could be charmed to The Other Side? Give me a fucking break.

Besides, they don't typically make movies where *anyone* ends up a lesbian in the end (even supposed lesbians). However, the lesbian-becomes-a-straight-girl is done frequently - and for a very specific reason.

I have a lesbian pulp novel from the 60's (collector's item) that features the same plot line - girls have sex with lots of girls until they eventually renounce their transgressions and fall in love with a man. (It's hilarious.) This plot line serves an important social function, though. Men find lesbians sexy and attractive (the mythical ones, anyway), but only as a temporary diversion. The ending reinforces the status quo with a return to normalcy (heterosexuality). By presenting deviance and then showing it to be merely illusion, all transgressions that threaten social uniformity are ultimately stripped of their power.

A lesbian that "turns" a straight woman would rarely be seen because it threatens the social structure. If you do see it at all, it's likely going to be an independent film - not one funded by a major movie studio (our contemporary myth makers).
