08/06/03: Saw a bunch of movies this week

(No spoilers)

"Seabiscuit" - very good, but very by-the-numbers. Real- life stories that get made into films always have happy endings, and knowing this doesn't help matters much. Some pacing problems, at one point I was checking my watch. Great sets, costumes, cinematography. Chris Cooper and Tobey do well. I guess I'd recommend it if and when you're in the mood for a slightly less exctiting version of "Rocky".

Tomb Raider 2: The Cradle Of Life" - just lousy. Some of the stunts are well done, but obviously impossible, and the movie takes itself too seriously to let it slide. At least two scenes are ripped off from "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" - I don't mind an *homage*, but re-using stuff just to spruce up your own story is not cool. Jolie wears a jogbra this time (sorry, folks), but she does wear a skin-tight silver wetsuit (visible nipplage) and at one point is soaking wet draped in a towel. Not really an improvment over the last one at all, half-assed "plot" and forgettable everything else. Second worst film I've seen this summer.

"American Wedding" - fair to middlin'. Some funny moments, in the same vein as the first two. Some moments too gross to relate (for anyone who has seen it - chocolate truffle). Gets awfully *special* at the end, Eugene Levy is underused (I think he supplies a lot of funny as Jim's Dad), and Sean William Scott is too talented to keep doing this role. I think he's hysterical, I just wish he could find something a little more grown up. If you enjoyed the first two, you'll enjoy it. (BTW, Michele's wedding dress has to made by this particular guy, then ends up looking like something off-the-rack at JC Penneys. Whoever had costume duty ought to have made something with a little more pizzaz)

"The Quiet American" (DVD) - Quiet is a good word for it. Anti-climactic, disappointing. Because it's told in flashback, I could see the only "twist" (if you can call it that) coming a mile away. Michael Caine is quite good, but he's always quite good, and this part wasn't anything really special. It wasn't what I expected, which is OK, but it was rather dull and I found it hard to sympathize with anyone (the adulterer, the American, or the not-really- a-whore-but-kind-of-a-whore love interest).
