02/07/1999: Re: What's your favorite Grisham movie?

Only pretty good: The Firm and Time to Kill.

John Grisham is no longer a writer. He is now a component in a package that always gets the green light if the right stars are attached. I don't think he cares about writing, therefore I do not find his movies original or even extremely entertaining, and I would never pay for a book of his, nor would I check one out of the library. John Grisham should live and be well, but please - don't ask me for my favorite movie title. I can only stand the Firm because of Gene Hackman, Wilfred Brimley and Gary Busey - with a big crashing cymbal sound in virtual reality for Holly Hunter, who for once, overplayed her part.

Don't get me wrong. Sydney Pollack is a great director, and his movies are always good for several eye candy peaks. But in my middle age, I prefer less gloss and more guts. Tom Cruise - feh. I would tumble for Hackman in a minute, but Tommy Boy will have to get in line.

Time to Kill WAS extremely condecending to its audience. But you can forgive a lot when you have Samuel L. Jackson. A very special man, that Jackson.

Sorry for just jumping in here like this, I didn't realize there were any movie forums left where actual opinions were being expressed, with no gutshots, no glory, and an easy exit........
