Just because a film is about the beginning of the Qin Dynasty, doesn't mean it has to last as long. It follows Ying Zheng's (the guy whose body is guarded by the terra cotta warriors) descent into megalomania as he conquers adjoining kingdoms to "unite all under heaven". The performances are first-rate and the story interesting, but it really needed a final prune in the editing suite.
The battle scenes are as good as those in 'Gladiator'. But, like the Scott film, violent instances see the camera turing away at the point of impact. Are Chinese studios getting as sensitive as their American counterparts when it comes to criticisms of on-screen
