Sex seems to rate low in Scotts films. Curious. He doesn't resort to gratuitous sex to bring in his audience but never hesitates to throw blood around. Maybe he's a gay S/M. NOT.
Sparticus and Gladiator are on a par in premise where-as Caligula was in another catagory all together. Decadent sex. Gulliones effort to integrate porn into mainstream film making. Unfortunately it landed in a no mans land somewhere between legitimate, serious art and hard-core raunch. Bad combo. Connoisseurs of either generally have little use for the other and neither was done well. The history was weak and the sex scenes watered down. Much more work should have been done on Caligulas character and actions. The sex scenes more consistently graphic. If your going to do it- don't hold back, be it the dark nature at the core of Caligula or the intensity of a Roman Orgy. Until this mix is mastered I'll count on the big screens for legitimate film viewings and leave it to Pennelopies Porn Palaces for graphic adult entertainment.
I must admit I was hoping to see a scene in Gladiator regarding one of their rewards. In the ruins of pompei an arena was unearthed. In one small gladiator chamber they excavated there were six skeletons. One male, large in stature, and five females wearing fine jewelry. I wonder if it was worth it.
