09/27/01: Other openings this week, plus "Migiddo"

Migiddo/Omega Code 2: It was 10 times better than "Omega Code 1." That means it's only a bad movie, as opposed to being an EXTREMELY, HORRIBLY, MIND-THROBBINGLY bad movie. This time the plot makes complete and perfect sense. It just has a little bit too much preaching in it (DUH), and the whole idea that some guy (even the devil -- or Ted Turner) can take over the world in that manner is ludicrous. Worst of all was the CGI rendering of the Devil himself -- Jesus, I know they didn't have much of a budget to work with, but surely they can find ONE Christian at ILM who'll help them for free! Prior to the Devil spreading his wings, they were doing pretty well with that budget -- heck, if it wasn't for the obnoxious music, the battle at the end would have been as good as anything in "Pearl Harbor." Not that that's saying much, but anyway... I don't quite get the sequel status, though. Michael York's character returns for the new film, but that doesn't make a lot of sense considering what happened to him in the first film. Not that I can really remember anything that happened in "Omega Code," but it seems that the new film has nothing to do with it other than that character and, of course, the God vs. the Devil aspect. I've certainly seen worse, more boring, less interesting, more shabbily acted films this year. 3/10

Hearts in Atlantis: Not anywhere near as good as "Shawshank" or "Stand By Me." More the kind of movie the "Green Mile" crowd would like (I didn't care too much for the thing myself). So vague for the first hour that I almost lost interest by the time the interesting stuff started. 6/10

Zoolander: Dumb and hilarious at the same time. Not very consistent in the hilarity, though. Owen Wilson is funnier than Ben Stiller is. The sex scene that originally got it an R rating is definitely a winner. Vince Vaughn doesn't even say anything. Billy Zane says WAAAAAY too much. All I gotta say about Will Ferrell's performance is just relax, don't do it. Overall, it's really not anywhere near as much like "Austin Powers" as I thought it was going to be, primarily because Zoolander is a true idiot while Austin is simply an ignorant guy in the wrong time zone. Furthermore, Austin is purposely trying to foil the enemy's plans while Zoolander is just going along for the ride. Definitely a good movie for these times -- we need some silly comic relief. I wouldn't be shocked if it opened with more than $20M. 6.5/10

Don't Say A Word: Okay, I won't. Especially since I don't actually see it until tonight.

And for the record, "Ghost World," the best movie released during the summer, finally opens here. And it's already being bashed by one of the newspaper critics. He can go to ghost hell. 9/10
