05/11/98: The book was much better

There's a lot of problems with taking a story like the Godfather to the big screen. All the questions Mr Cranky has about the intelligence of Moe Green and his alikes is answered in the book by Mario Puzo. First of all, Tom Hagen makes several comments to himself such as "how did this idiot get to be a pezzonovante?" during his meeting with the studio exec. It is also made much clearer that Vito orders the removal of the horse's head to be placed in that exec's bed more because the man is a paedophile, not just because he won't give Fontane the movie role. Secondly, it explains that both Woltz and Green are supremely egotistical little gits who are unable to comprehend there are more powerful people in the world than them and their idiotic circles of friends.

There's only one thing in the book that is left out of the movies - the origins of Luca Brasi. Would have been nice to see how that man came to be but we can't have everything. Considering the track records of movies against books as far as detail goes, I think The Godfather could rightly be called the best film of all time.
