01/18/98: Moot?

Posted By: The Zinger

Godfather Part II is that rarest of movies.

A prime reason the Corleone family characters are so appealing is the tragic nature of Vito Corleone's beginnings and what he was able to build from it. Whereas Michael's tragedies seem almost self-inflicted in Part II as he destroys everyone around him (Kay, Fredo), his father's story is one of simple roots and making it big (through graft, corruption, & violence) in America. Having seen Part I is what makes the viewer care about Vito's past, Michael's present, and what makes this such a great sequel.

Frankly, I'm confused by the author's (Paul's) assertion that any issue about this movie is "moot."
