Sure it was 4 hours long, this is a civil war film. It is supposed to be EPIC.
As for the hastily put together costumes, it si supposed to look that way, this film concentrated on the confederate victories in the start of the civil war. the CSA army did not any real regulation uniform for the commom foot soldiers. Their army in a real sense was hastily put to together after the succession to combat the Union army.
Even with the superior industrial and logisitical capactiy of the North, the union army still had their supply problems.
There was reviews complaining tha the film concentrated on teh rebels too much, SO WHAT! If we just made all civil war films concentrate on the Union we are only getting 1/2 of the story.
MY only complaint with the film, there was not enough battle scenes.
