11/20/1998: This is (gulp) the BEST of the big summer blowout flicks.

I felt vaguely obligated to see what all the fuss was about so in quick succession I've just rented Deep Impact, Armageddon, and now Godzilla. Believe it or not, this was the BEST of the big summer flicks. Deep Impact was the absolute WORST -- in every way and from every perspective: story, acting, special effects, believability (especially believability). Armageddon was a little better although an awful lot of its special effects were nothing but EXTREME CLOSEUPS of something exploding and throwing off sparks. Godzilla, on the other hand, seemed to have a little sense of humor about itself, which made all the difference when it came to believability--you could cut them some slack because they sort of were in on the joke with you (i.e., this is all so fucking far-fetched but the special effects are pretty good, don'tcha think?). One bad thing: The girl who was Matthew Broderick's "girlfriend" was painful to watch. Jean Reno was great (as usual)! It's good for a yuk.
