08/27/00: I dunno about Mr. Cranky, but I enjoyed G2000

Saw the movie three times (since opening day) and I got the Japanese version on tape. I thought both versions were very good! The Japanese version is not only more serious and straightforward, but has more depth and explains what's going on. Although some scenes got cut out and some of the music replaced, the US version was still fun and entertaining, and doesn't take itself too seriously! I also thought this film was the most watchable after TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA (Toho; 1975), and was a major improvement over the Series 2 (1984-1995) films. I was surprised to see that the press gave this movie positive reviews, even if they STILL use words like "cheesy" or "campy."

Suitamation (or what you call man-in-suit effects) is still a respected tradition in Japan (see GAMERA: GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE and its two sequels for one of the most excellent compromise between suitamation and CGI). And US audiences and critics still aren't happy enough that Toho used CGI in this movie! Geez, I guess Jim Henson's Creature Shop shouldn't make any more muppets and animatronics, and resort to a CGI Kermit the Frog! Besides, it's not CGI, right!?!

Fuck the detractors and go and enjoy G2000!

BTW, a new Godzilla movie had just finished its principal and FX shooting, and will begin post-production soon! Go to this page for more info:

(Go to the "English Page")

Toho and Tri-Star are negotiating a theatrical release for that one, too!

Peace Out,
