08/28/00: The inventor of Lucky Charms cereal is dead

From today's (Minneapolis) Star Tribune, page B7:

<quote>

John Holahan, 83, a former General Mills vice president, apparently ran a stop sign at County Rd. 6 and Willow Drive in Osseo, steering into a truck's path.

[His wife,] Rosalind, 84, died at the scene; John Holahan died four hours later.

[...]

John Holahan was the man who created Lucky Charms cereal.

For years he would share that story with home economics students at Annandale Middle School. He would recall stumbling upon orange marshmallow peanuts while brainstorming in supermarket aisles in 1963. About taking them back to the lab, cutting them up and then sprinkling them over Cheerios.

"I knew we had a winner," John Holahan would say later.

Man, I can hardly believe that once upon a time I ate those things. --Illinois_Stan
