08/31/00: How come there are no more monster horror movies?

Posted By: Parca_Mortem

With the post-"Scream" reinterest of Hollywood in producing horror movies, we first got a bunch of slashers made ("I Know...", "Urban Legend", "Bride of Chucky", "Halloween: H20"), many self-spoofing. We even got attempts in creating another Freddy Krueger ("Wishmaster", "Strangeland"), which failed. One werewolf movie ("American Werewolf in Paris") and two vampire movies ("Vampires" and "Blade" - although the latter isn't really part of the horror genre) were also thrown into the mix, as well as a Stephen King adaptation ("Apt Pupil").

At the same time, we started getting slightly close to the monster movie revival when they started releasing movies of the "when animals attack" genre, boosted with the unexplained success of "Anaconda": "Mimic", "Bats", "Deep Rising", "Deep Blue Sea", "Lake Placid", etc. Some never made it to the big screen, others were interrupted in mid-production. Also we got "Alien" rip offs: "Event Horizon", "Virus", "Supernova"; and even a sequel, "Alien: Resurrection" (although that one was in production before "Scream" came along). Then there were several attempts at making mummy movies, but only one made it to the big screen, a remake of "The Mummy", and it was transformed into an adventure movie.

So on Hollywood went onto a frenzy of remakes (including "Psycho") which somehow, mixed in with the advent of the new millenium, lead to the revival of both the ghost genre and the religious horror thriller. Before you knew it, every other A-list actor was in one. The success of "The Sixth Sense" has bolstered more ghost movies into production, and I'm sure the success of "What Lies Beneath" will help to keep the ghost movies (and writers) coming. Also released so far have been movies about people in the mind of killers ("In Dreams" and "The Cell"), and the occasional relatively novel concept ("The Blair Witch Project").

But... no horror movies about monsters. No, not giant animals, but bizarre monsters that come out of nowhere and mangle a bunch of people. I know that several have come to video, but I'm talking about the big screen. The last one I recall being released is "The Relic", which was released only 2 weeks after "Scream", so it doesn't count as part of the "Scream" influenced revival. Come on, Hollywood, where are the monsters???

And while we're at it, also get zombie movies in!!! And perhaps the occasional movie about witches (and the Blair witch doesn't count)... AND MORE EXPERIMENTAL HORROR!!!!!!!
