The school board for the state of Kansas is holding hearings about using a "more balanced" approach to teaching about the origin of life. But let's cut through the bullshit. Now that there is a majority of ignorant-ass fundies on the Kansas state school board, they are going to vote to include the teaching of "intelligent design" in their science classes. They call what they are about to do hearings, but the fundies have already made up their minds and have said as much. The hearings are nothing but a sham. Science teachers and experts in evolution have refused to participate in this public charade. The board has asked one lawyer to represent the Darwinian point of view and he has accepted. He is rather expert in the theory of evolution and he is looking forward to his Clarence Darrow moment.
I have already heard one of the fundie school board's experts question why we are teaching evolution when it is just a theory. What the hell is someone doing advising a school board on science curricula who doesn't even understand what a scientific theory is? A theory is an explanation for a series of facts. It consistently undergoes peer review and refinement. That is the overview of scientific method, which learns from experiments based on objectives, theories, procedures, results, and conclusions. Successful experiments are those which can be repeated by others.
We have got to rid ourselves of these fundamentalist gangsters who have infiltrated our government in order to force their narrowly defined whacko religious views on to the American public. Their great fear is that the more we learn about science, the more it detracts from the wonder and mystery that they see as the basis for their all important all encompassing all controlling religion. For this collection of idiots, science is seen as the enemy of religion. Since their religion combines faith with ignorance, they may have a point. Most people of faith have no compatibility problems between religion and science. It's high time we stopped humoring these damned fundie gangsters and tossed them on the scrap heap along with the Nehru jackets, the washboards, and the other useless relics from our past.
