The Winchester Mystery House.
Very similar. Mrs. Winchester was married to the heir of the Winchester gun fortune. She lost a bit of her touch with reality when her baby and her husband died. She hired a psychic to try to communicate with her husband. Instead, the psychic told her that the ghosts of anyone who was ever killed by a Winchester gun were going to haunt her...unless she moved out west and got a house and then continually built onto it. She could make the ghosts happy that way.
So, she did. For 38 years, there was constant construction on the house. She also became obsessed with the number 13. There are stairways that lead to ceilings, and doors that open to nothing or bare walls. It is a freaky house. All construction stopped the moment she was declared dead. It's now opened to tourists. I hope to go someday.
