the ancient Romans had a very similar concoction called "garum." It was pretty much made the same way - salting fish/fish bones (anchovies, I think) and letting it ferment. The liquid that dripped off was garum. Oenogarum, garum mixed with wine, was a very popular condiment, if memory serves.
