As someone who hasn't owned a console since the original Nintendo, but still plays at friends' houses - I think the PS3 is going to go the way of the old Neo-Geo. It's too expensive and has too many bells and whistles for a gaming system. Who wants to buy a gaming system for $500 just because it can play DVDs? Not me. I have a DVD player for that. I also could care less about cutting-edge graphics when we're looking at that price-tag. I prefer how well and how fun the games are, and I don't think PS3 has anyone beat in that category.
In moments when I think about purchasing a console system the Wii looks very promising - it's cheap/reasonably priced ($250), and looks like the experience is fun and the games aren't bad either. Not sure how much the X-Box 360 costs but it's gotta be less than $500 - which I'd rather use on a short vacation for myself than an uber-expensive gaming system.
