I remember watching an episode of 20/20 nearly 10 years ago on Christopher McCandless, not long before the book came out. Something that was discussed in the episode that you don't really see being noted anymore is that he was exhibiting bizarre personality traits leading up to his college graduation, and it's generally accepted that he was suffering from the onset of schizophrenia while still in college, which manifested itself fully after graduating. What makes this book (and movie) so pointless is that he's portrayed as a romantic adventurer/vagabond type of character, when in fact he was suffering from mental illness and didn't know any better. What he did was stupid, tragic, and naive, but unfortunately he was incapable of realizing it, and no one else was willing to accept the fact that he needed help.
