The "Bush is invading Iraq so that his Texas oil buddies can get rich" theory is, indeed, embarrassing. While there certainly will be Bush cronies who will profit from the war (Halliburton! Halliburton! Halliburton!), starting a unilateral war with massive risks so that a bunch of extremely rich guys can become slightly richer is a stretch. However, there is a lot of credence to the notion that the war is about American control of FUTURE oil reserves, especially the oil that will be going to Europe in the next decades. If Iraq, home of the world's second largest oil reserve, is under American suzeranity (that's not even CLOSE to being spelled correctly), then it won't matter if those weepy bitches in the UN don't like American supremacy: they'll have to suck our dicks to get access to our oil. Also, Russia will have to toe our line, due to the fact that if Iraq unleashes a glut of oil onto the world market, it would destroy the Russian economy, which is propped up (barely) by oil reserves in the Caucuses that are much more expensive to mine than the Iraq ones. American influence in Iraq will also allow the U.S. to build permanent Middle Eastern military bases that won't be threatened by an ungrateful autocracy that constantly has to make public noises against the U.S. to maintain its authority (Saudi Arabia). That kind of American presence in the Middle East, coupled with a fully developed, precedented policy of unilateral pre-emptive military force, will gurantee that the U.S. not only remains the sole superpower, but that no other nation will be able to do anything whatsoever about it.
