My mom said she saw Joel Siegal (movie reviewer for Good Morning America) saying that he interviewed Leo and that Leo is very shy (which may be why he comes across as "hateful" in his interviews) and uncomfortable with the hoopla that is made over him and that he didn't want to go because it makes him nervous and that he didn't want to take away from the others there. Joel seemed to think it was completely understandable.
I, too, think it made him look a bit immature, but maybe there's more to it than we know...
