You have a point; we'll never know his real reason. Still, two things: whatever his true reason, it still kinda looked bad. (circumstantial, I guess) Second, if he decided not to go because he wasn't nominated, I seriously doubt he'd admit to it on an interview...
I think, really, the only way we could verify the shy reason is if he had been nominated and still hadn't shown up.
I could possibly buy shy, I guess, but in the articles I've read about him, he seems to enjoy goofing around and imitating people. That seems like someone who enjoys attention. (?)
