is how the events that take place during Jacob's hallucination parallel his struggle to survive being bayonetted. The demon doctors that operate on him represent his fevered vision of the Vietnam medics. The entire construct of "the Ladder" represents his mind's struggle to explain why he has been mortally wounded by a comrade. If Jacob's ladder in any way accurately reflects what takes place in the mind as the body slowly dies, I hope I go quickly...
