You know, I ought to know by now to take technical problems to Crankyland first. I have been to AVG's free forum and it has managed to be no help at all so maybe someone in here knows what's what.
I've been using AVG Free for several years no with no problems and no complaints. But right around Christmas it wouldn't update. All it says is that "the update server connection failed" and that no other information is available. I've tried all the ways to fix this suggested by the error message: obviously my internet connection is active, I have never touched the proxy server, my Firewall setting haven't been changed and AVG is allowed access, essentially this problem just suddenly sprang up with no explanation.
As I said, I've tried AVG's FAQ (no help at all) and their forum. I never got my password to log in for some reason so I'm stuck hoping someone had similar issues. So I tried to reinstall and got as far as the steps 2. Check the download file MD5 hash value [forum.grisoft.cz] and 3. If it is correct run the AVG Free install file
The guy does not say what to do if your install file *is* corrupted. Arrrgh!!!!!
Now, am I overreacting? Has anyone else had this problem? Do I dare go ahead and install the trial version of the Not-free AVG?
