Nevermind my above post. I haven't been here for a few days and missed your original post about Thailand and Japan. Re. Japan, I've only been to Tokyo. There is quite a culture shock there, and despite its reputation as an international business city, I found it difficult to find any English speakers. Rest assured, though, that subway signs and placards are in both English and Japanese. Japan (or Tokyo at least) is a very strange place - an interesting combination of old culture (temples, superstitions, respect for elders) and very, very new (my brand new tri-band cell phone wouldn't even register over there).

I haven't been to Thailand yet, but am going next month! From what I've read, Thai is a very difficult language to understand tonally, but English speakers are more common. Watch out for ladyboys!
