07/23/02: Accents

Posted By: NotQuiteSonic

Why do they even bother to do accents at all? The ONLY reason an accent makes any sense, is in a situation where a character speaks one language, but is speaking English (or whatever) as a second language! However, seeing as how these are Russian characters, and they're speaking with other Russian characters (are there any non-Russians in this movie?), why even bother? Wouldn't they be speaking Russian? Since it's obviously all total bullshit, why not just use the actors' everyday voices?

Why not just have the actors say, "Hey, I play a Russian, and 10 million just isn't enough to learn the language in 3 months, and far too many stupid plebes bitch and moan about reading subtitles anyway, so just imagine that I'm speaking Russian." Do filmmakers and audiences honestly believe that people from other countries speak accented English to each other? If they do, then I wouldn't be surprised. No no, surely nobody's THAT damn stupid. Are they?
