12/15/02: K-19 , Rewriting the Historybooks

Posted By: Charn

I just saw this movie on video , and while the acting is superb and the drama is intense , what guts me is the lack of factual realism . First of all this movie should be retitled: The Perils of Pauliniskovich - for here you have everything going wrong ... The hual of the ship buckles , the doctor is killed , the Reactor Engineer is replaced by an incompetent , no radiation suits , the reactor plumbing ruptures again then again ,, a commanding officer that is obsessed with obeying orders more than crew safty - then , instead of going down like tje Caine Mutiny , the Russian Capt Ahab(played by Ford ) is suddenly given a chance to redeem himself .

Throughout this movie you see the nasty hand of Kat Bigelow's direction - she is the same who directed STRANGE DAYS and other nihilistic fatalistic violent garbage Once more you get the impression of this film and others in recent yrs that Hollywood is trying to rehabilitate the image of the Soviet Union - an empire that was trying to destroy us at the time of this film story's events I mean , why make it at all ? And why is the National Geographic part of the production - not technical advisors , the Producers ! ?

With due thought Chad Castagana
