12/28/01: Time travel questions

Posted By: Philm_Phan

1876 isn’t bad, really — one would get to enjoy Oscar Wilde’s aesthetic phase shortly, at least. But if you were to choose periods of history for various reasons —

1. What year would your ideal partner come from?

2. When would you like to live for an extended period of time?

3. When would you like to enjoy a brief vacation?

4. When would you buy a lot of clothes?

5. When would you most be tempted to change history?

6. Any past time period that you feel you DID live in?

I wanna answer now —

1. Late eighteenth century, of course — all the emphasis on manners and wit, combined with an increasing awareness of social injustices.

2. Same period, or maybe 1880, which had the advantage of indoor plumbing — as long as I have enough money to live as a lady of quality. (Selfish of me, I know.)

3. Tudor England for Twelfth Night revels. Round about 1520, when Henry VIII was still young and relatively uncorrupted, married to that nice Catherine of Aragon. I certainly wouldn’t say no to seats at the opening of HAMLET some years later, either.

4. 1788, dressed a la mode — or 1810, when feeling the need for a bit less corseting.

5. 1777, outside Saratoga. “General Burgoyne, that idiot Howe isn’t going to come through for you.” Alternately, 1789 — “Mr. Fox, Prime Minister Pitt is just waiting for you to do something rash such as claiming royal preogatives for the Prince of Wales. Be more temperate in your strategy and you’ll have that Regency within a month.”

6. A few, obviously...
