01/02/02: The subjective nature of film reviewing

Posted By: Coaster

Most people who post here aren't swayed by the opinions of film critics when it comes to actually deciding on which films to see. Even Roger Ebert admits that his reviews have little effect on the film market. Within the confines of these forums, you will find people who actually liked The Blair Witch Project. Subjectivity in the movie reviewing process would dictate a degree of diversity in published opinions. To witness such, surf on over to rotten-tomatoes.com and select the movie of your choice. Unless one finds extremes in reviews (Both Ebert and Cranky said that Battlefield Earth was the worst movie they had ever seen in their lives), you'll find as many differeing opinions as there are reviewers.

To me, what makes a good review is for the reviewer to provide enough information for me to make up my own mind without spoiling the experience. Or, tangentially, the review can be cleverly written in a manner that will make me laugh my ass off. Thus, my presence here.

I find that I agree with the extremes of Cranky: I agree with most of his one-bombers and most of his dynomites.

As Dave Barry says, "You are free to disagree with me, but that would be stupid."
