04/20/00: Re: PROGRAMMER AND AN ENGINEER

Hazel, I understand your skepticism. In fact I respect it. I value actions above words and I tend not to trust the words of “toadies”. Let me tell you: they are everywhere and I hate them with a passion. The first words to my guys in my new job in March was:

“I will make no promises to you. Those that came before me made promises to you and they didn’t fulfill them. Therefore there is no reason why you should trust me; for all you know I am just another one of “them”. From now on I am going to tell you what I’m going to do and actually do it. After a while you will find that you can trust me. Then I will make promises.”

I’ve done that. In fact, I’m the only one who hangs Dilbert comics on the corkboard in my cube. Usually poking fun at myself, but even better, the kind of “upper” management that you referred to, not because I’m sucking ass, but because I find them funny. And, yes, I did say “cube”. I sit with my people. I turned down the office I was offered because I walked into a seriously fucked-up organization and my need to discuss private HR matters was far less than my normal desire to lead from the front.

I know what my guys feel because I talk to them. More importantly they talk to me. They can talk to me about anything, but I prefer that they come to me with a solution to a problem rather than a rant.

But why should you believe me: you don't know me from a sled-dog...

Oh fuck! I’m rambling! Someone stop me!!!!!
