To begin, I thought Kicking and Screaming was very funny and that the cinematography was very good. But Kicking and Screaming was 'laugh out loud' humor (Go away, Cookie Man!) while Hal Hartley relies on dry wit and slow pacing to create a thoughtful film that causes snickers and laughs, yet few guffaws. ("Do you love me?" "I respect and admire you." "Isn't that love?" "No, that's respect and admiration.") Mr. Cranky just wanted to impress us with his knowledge of independant filmmakers and didn't care if his comparison made sense, as long as it was scathing. Grow up.
