The number of fat ugly people in any given society has more to do with how available TV coverage of sports there is. In America, TV is so prevelant that they are probably working out a way to include actual episodes of TV shows in peoples T shirts (Call 'em TTVs), and thus the mass of the average American is slowly moving towards the said TTVs being wide screen.
While, if you contrast this to say, the middle east, the average terrorist actually isn't bad looking, even the portly ones. Out there, the only real competitive sports that seems to come on TV out of there is competitive spontanious combustion. The loser gets 72 virgins in the afterlife, the winner gets the whores.
