10/16/03: "That Chicago guy who interfered with the foul ball..."

I'm perplexed. Dan's first post clearly implied interference. His subsequent posts state otherwise. So, Dan, which is it? Interference or not? I'm not quite following your explanation that a fan has a "right" to the ball. Please clarify.

All this aside, I'm in agreement that Steve Bartman did what thousand of other baseball fans do on a routine basis - try and snag a souvenir ball during a game. That it happened during a pivotal moment in the playoffs where emotions run at a fever pitch, doesn't help, but it's doubtful that Bartman's action screwed the Cubs. The Marlins out-played them, period. And I was rooting for the Cubbies.

Of course, let's see how reasonable I'll be if a similar situation occurs in tonight's showdown between the Yankees and the Red Sox. I can't imagine it being any uglier than when Pedro Martinez takes that first walk to the pitcher's mound in Yankee stadium. Unless of course, he beans another player....
