Conservatives generally favor maintaining the status quo as opposed to radical change. Liberals tend to favor more aggressive changes to the existing social and economic structure. Libertarians (small 'l' libertarians, not the Libertarian party) tend to favor individual freedoms over state power of any sort. One of the problems in more specifically defining conservative / liberal / libertarian is that all have more extreme factions and most people fall wholly into neither category.
