03/27/08: A miraculous event is occuring in Albany...

They're finally close to passing a State Budget on time!

(Seriously, if you lived here those budget battles were like trying to make Israel and Palestine get along.)

Sadly the project to make the main post office the new Penn Station seems to have succumbed to a bureaucratic red tape overdose. Of course Madison Square Garden stuck their nose in it and now have pulled out of it and screwed us out of another nice thing. (They killed the West Side Jets Stadium, but don't seem to care about the new Nets arena in Brooklyn... yet.) The original plan had no mention of a new Garden on the 9th Avenue end of the site, which is really the middle of nowhere. Then somehow a new Garden appeared in the plans, which pissed off the people upstate. So today, after much concern over funding the whole thing, the Garden people pull out and says they'll just renovate their current building. Adding insult to injury, the Garden pays no property taxes, ever, since the 1980s when they threatened to move to Jersey during the Koch administration. Yet they raised Ranger's ticket prices by $10 this season, the nerve!

Interestingly, the City Council must approve the renovation. Maybe that sweet tax free deal will come to an end... probably not, instead I'll expect that next year I'll be forced up into the 300 level seats for the same price I paid for 200 level ones this season. (two seasons ago I actually got into the 100 level, and the 200s on St. Patrick's day with Boston in town believe it or not.)
