the 2nd amendment has *nothing* to do with hunting. You do know that, right?
As long as it's the law of the land, guns are legal. Period. In fact, I think you could make a good legal argument that not only assault weapons, but every weapon available to the military should be accessible to the citizenry. It's about people having the right to take back the government by force, not killing deer or self protection.
Note I'm not saying I believe Joe Schmoe should be able to carry a bazooka down the street, not at all. I'm just saying that the 2nd amendment could reasonably be argued to permit private citizens, perhaps in the form of state or municipal militias, access to all the same weapons that the US military has. It may seem outdated, but it is still the law of the land, and if you really don't like it, lobby to change the 2nd amendment.
