10/07/97: What's this thing labeled plot device?

Posted By: LunaMoth

Okay, here are some I could easily do without in any other movies....

on a ship or plane or whatever, someone casually mentions explosive devices "hey don't touch that, it's an explosive" and you know that when the time comes to blow something up, guess what they'll remember?

or along the same lines, if someone casually mentions a special talent early in the movie, you can bet that in a crucial scene this little hobby of theirs will come in handy.... such as being able to dislocate your shoulder to get out of a straight jacket, or being able to do gymnastics, or hotwire a car....

And you know that if you ever even see the kids or wife of the danger-dude that his enemies will end up kidnapping them.

I'll put in a second vote against "cop three days away from retirement" cliche, just since I hate it so much.... and likewise for the bad guy who has to explain all his actions.

How about the over-used character? The hooker with the heart of gold, the ex-cop who breaks the rules but is the only one who can get the job done, and the nderappreciated school geek who can hack into government computers should be banned from all movies for at least a generation.
