10/06/97: Cliche or bad execution?

Or both?

I've always enjoyed subtle foreshadowing. Or at least, I think I have. It's been quite a while since I've seen any.

On one thing you can be sure: If ever a scene or even a brief camera shot seems mind-bendingly incongruous, it undoubtedly attempts to serve as a solution to some complication later in the movie. Usually this is in the form of a fleeting reference or shot that contains either the key to the heroes narrow escape at the end of the movie or the explanation for an obviously contrived plot twist.

Example:

That (apparently worthless) NASA unit in Dante's Peak and our heroes' ultimate rescue.
