Once upon a time, say, until the 1930s, the verb *baiser* meant "to kiss." It still means "to kiss" when one says something like "The knight kissed the lady on the hand."

In other uses, the word *baiser* came to mean "to screw."

This offered the opportunity for high schoolers in French classes all over the US of A to have a good laugh from time to time, at the expense of some poor schmuck who uses the word incorrectly.
