You can send out a story and then wait FOUR MONTHS for a rejection letter. Then repeat the process. Then repeat the process. Then repeat the process. Figuring in the law of averages--1000 rejection letters for every single acceptance letter--you're looking at a 333 1/3 year wait unless you get lucky early on.
Fuck that. Send it out to as many editors as you want to. If you're story *does* happen to get accepted simultaneously, the worst case scenario is that you burn a single bridge, piss off a single editor. There are thousands of agents and publishers out there. Take advantage of it.
