I also fell for the complete lack of sense on that film. Sam Neil's take on Dr. Weir was a riot. He's crazy...no wait, he just loves his creation. No he's crazy. No, now he's scared. I ate it up. And when he actually got back into the ship at the end as the evil Dr. Weir/ devil thing, well, sci-fi horror bliss for me. Before Totem Bash has a coronary, the quote is from the Abyss. I reckon that means I get out even less.
Oh, and O is Tom Arnold in True Lies.
