04/22/98: Hmmm, let's pay attention to reality, shall we?

In case one of you guys think that L.A. Confidential is guilty of impersonating other good movies in much the same way as Brad Pitt is guilty of impersonating better actors in his movies, you are wrong. Really, like that was a surprise, Stephen Hawkings. Many of the characters in this movie may seem realistic because, low and behold, they existed, like Johnny stomponoto and Mickey Cohen (by the way, in case you didn't know, Johnny Stomponoto was found murdered in Lana Turner's house in L.A. in '54). The other character's in this movie were compilations both of real cops who existed at that time, and James Ellroy's imagination. By far, L.A. Confidential was one of the best movies of 1997, bringing to mind movies more like this one: i.e. Lone Star, The Shawshank Redemption, Grand Canyon, Barcelona...or movies that took the time to build interesting stories about characters we cared for.
