06/15/98: L.A. Confidential Was The Best Film, Titanic Was The Best Spectacle

Posted By: Malkovich

Hi,

I loved "L.A. Confidential" and I think it had the best plot and acting of any film I saw this year. Russell Crowe was the star of the film, but Guy Pearce, James Cromwell, and Kevin Spacey were also excellent. Kim Basinger was good, but her Oscar was a joke. Julianne Moore was far superior in "Boogie Night."

When I left the theater after seeing "L.A. Confidential" I thought to myself "Damn, that is one rock-solid flick, it should win some awards." But when I left the theater after seeing "Titanic" I thought "Damn, that film just took it to another level."

Forget the bullshit about Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett. Forget about the over-the-top storyline. Now just think about the way you sat in the theater, jaw wide open as you watched that ship sink into the ocean, people drowning like ants in your backyard.

The disolve shots of the ship going from wreckage to the sterling vessel of the past, FUCKING AMAZING! I didn't mind the story as much as some, I thought the leads were good enough, Paxton and Zane were solid, and that old chick was pretty decent as well (her nomination was a joke).

"L.A. Confidential" did well at the Oscars, capturing Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Those are two prestigious awards. "Titanic" swept the plate clean, yet did not get any awards for acting. I don't have a problem with that.

It wasn't as important a film as "Schindler's List," but it took a this rather jaded and cynical movie reviewer and made me feel like a little kid. "Titanic" deserved everything it got.

The Malk
