12/05/1998: Cranky grasps at straws here

Posted By: Giuseppe

You can tell when Mr. Cranky really likes a movie. All of the funny "insults" are really just snappy one-liners that don't attack L. A. Confidential at all. But that's okay. What could you really attack? L. A. Confidential is the best film to come along in years (dare I say the best since technicolor?). The acting is fantastic; I still cannot understand why the Oscars didn't recognize Crowe, Pearce, or Spacey. I would have nominated all three of them. Kim Basinger got the Oscar as a consolation prize from the voters who figured this film deserved something since they weren't going to give it the one award it should have received. Basinger was good, but the best performances in this film were from the three leads. I've come to expect that from Spacey, the only actor of today's generation who can become a completely different person in every film he goes into. But I was (pleasantly) surprised at the performances from Crowe and Pearce. Who would have thought that these Aussies whose previous claims to fame were Virtuosity and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert could play L. A. cops, and play them so well? The writing is fantastic, and the Oscar was well-deserved, although an equal argument could be made for Wag the Dog. The score is great, the cinematography is great, the sets and costumes are great... see a trend here? I am sure that the on-set catering was fantastic, since there is nothing bad about this movie. As for the ending, well, Mr. Cranky, just because you could figure out who it was doesn't mean it was predictable. The scene where this comes out was shocking to all of us in the theatre (I won't ruin it for anyone who hasn't been lucky enough to see it), but those who have seen the film know what I am talking about when I say the Rollo Tomasi scene. I could go on all day, but I think I will go watch L. A. Confidential again.
