Scene 13 - Monday morning
This being Crankyland, and not reality, Ms. Beauregard is able to get a court date for her client immediately, and the trial begins. Likewise, this being Crankyland, normal courtroom procedures are out the window, since the author gets all her legal training from Law & Order reruns on A&E, and she’s ignoring that in favor of literary license.
Blunt the bailiff addresses the packed courtroom, “All rise for his honor, the Lord High Justice Wreck presiding.”
Prosecution calls its first witness, a Mr. Grundle.
“I heard them fighting. He was pushing her into marriage, and she wasn’t ready,” Grundle testifies.
“When was this argument?” LRT queries his witness.
“Thursday night. That’s the night Skilly got killed.”
“No further questions, your witness,” LRT passes him over to Violet.
“She should have been dating a nice guy. Then she’d still be alive!” Grundle continues with one of his favorite rants, unasked.
“Mr. Grundle,” LHJ Wreck cautions the witness, “you will confine your answers to questions that are asked. Your witness, Ms. Beauregard.”
“Mr. Grundle, what exactly did you overhear?”
“They were fighting.”
“So their voices were raised?”
“Yeah,”
“So you heard every word easily.”
“No, it was hard, I worked at it. It was my duty.” Grundle is proud.
“You don’t actually know what they were fighting about, do you, Mr. Grundle?” Violet attacks the witness.
“Yes! They were fighting about the wedding!”
“Did you hear the word wedding used?”
“No,” Grundle thinks, “I guess not,” he admits.
“I’m done with this witness, your Honor. I’d like to call my expert psychiatric witness to the stand.”
“Certainly,” agrees LHJ Wreck, “right after our lunch break.”
