Scene 16 - Tuesday morning
Back in the courtroom, LRT begins to question Slothrop.
“Did you or did you not have an argument with the victim on Thursday night?
“Yes,” Slothrop looks ashamed and guilty.
“Were you pressuring her to get married?”
“No! No! That’s a total lie!”
“It is not, she wanted to marry a nice guy!” A cry comes up from the back of the courtroom.
LHJ Wreck looks out over the crowd, “Mr. Grundle, I’m warning you for the last time.”
LRT continues, “Then what was this argument about, Slothrop?”
“I wanted to have children, a little Slothy or Skilly, Jr., running around. She didn’t want to add any more screaming brats to the world. We disagreed about that, but I know we could have worked it out.”
“Well, what about the phone call?”
“What phone call?”
“When this Diva person discovered the body, she tripped over the cord to a phone, a phone that had not been replaced on the receiver after its last use. The last person Skilly attempted to call was you! How do explain that, Mr. Slothrop?” LRT points his finger at the defendant.
“I, I don’t know, I wasn’t home. If only I had been, maybe, maybe...” Slothrop lets this thought trail off as he softly weeps.
Just then MEB breaks into the courtroom and approaches Violet. There is a quick, whispered conference.
“Your honor, may we have a brief recess and meet in your chambers?” Violet asks the bench.
LHJ Wreck leers at the lovely lady of the law, but his hopes are dashed, “To discuss matters of the case,” Violet scolds, “and LRT needs to be there also. Perhaps your assistant could join us too?” she asks LRT hopefully.
The four retire to the judge’s chambers.
