10/24/00: Just got back from "Lucky Numbers"

Posted By: Presley

My analysis of Cosgrove's analysis follows:

PROS: -- Lisa Kudrow. She's always funny.

***Actually, she's rarely funny in this movie. However, she does have some sex scenes and ALMOST exposes a boob, so that kind of makes up for it. It's definitely not an "Opposite Sex" type performance.

-- It's a refreshing change of pace for Nora Ephron. (Stay away from the treacle, Nora...)

***This movie definitely has more in common with "Very Bad Things" than "Sleepless Seattle" or "You've Got Mail." Oddly, that's not really a compliment.

-- Caper flicks are cool by me.

***I wouldn't go so far as to call this a "caper flick." It's more like a "heist flick."

CONS: -- John Travolta. He can be funny ("Get Shorty"), but lately only unintentionally.

***Travolta had the only big laughs here, but they were far and few between.

-- Nora already tried black comedy, and we got the abominable "Mixed Nuts". I don't think she deserves a second chance. (Go back to the treacle, Nora...)

***I missed "Mixed Nuts" -- but if it's anything like "Lucky Numbers," she definitely didn't deserve a second chance at black comedy. This was more dark gray than black and barely a comedy.

-- It was supposed to come out this summer, but the studio blinked and moved it to its current slot. Consider the weak- ass competition that was around this summer. Scary to think that they didn't believe that John Travolta could beat out "Scary Movie". (It wouldn't have, but who expected that?)

***I kinda have to agree with that move. "Scary Movie," being in the same genre, would have blown it away. Now it gets to open with supposed horror film "Blair Witch 2" and kiddie flick "Little Vampire." Mature adults who've already seen "Pay it Forward" once and "Meet the Parents" 9 times will have nowhere else to go (unless they take Lionel's suggestion).
