06/03/98: The first days of club music - LONG post...

Posted By: ICE-EuroDev

Hi there...

I'm a 29 year old software devloper and part-time DJ. In my short career spinning records and CD's I've taken a liking to what's known as Eurodance. Now, those of you who don't know Eurodance ( it can be somewhat compared to La Bouche and Amber ) - groups you'd hear on pop radio - it is an electronic form of music like techno but very different in that most Euro songs have words where a lot of techno doesn't. Basically it was supposed to have derived from Disco however, it doesn't retain the "sillyness" of the faddish clothes or the dorky dances that people emulate when they are making fun of it.

The reason I mentioned my age was to show that I was alive in that era (the 70's) but I never got into Disco because a) I was into KISS and Kansas and various other rock groups and b) I thought everybody dressed in "Disco garb" was a geek. It wasn't soon after that era when I became a musician and hating everything electronic. (in reference to music) Being a rock/metal musician primarily all my musical life, the death of modern metal and the onslaught of rap and rebirth of Disco, Blues and 80's pop plus the introduction to "modern rock" a.k.a. alternative, made me realize that I would fight a losing battle if here in the 90's I kept the war cry going "Hail Bon Jovi!!!". I'd probably get my ass kicked wherever I went in public also. After *accidentally* becoming a DJ I then took on a whole new outlook on music.

I wonder how many people actually "hated" Disco. If it was so bad why has it been forced down the throats of people in the 90's now?!? I, personally never liked it, but it seems that the music that's popular today is all depressing and angry. Rap seems to let you know that it's OK to kill your enemy just because he looked at you the wrong way. I think rap sucks personally although there are some decent songs out there - "Gangsters Paradise" - Alternative seems to be too... "slow". I can't even think of a good word for it - yet I do like a lot of the newer bands - but none of it seems *fun*. Music is a big part of my life and has been for years and I like it to energize me or make me feel good. I think sometimes that element is missing today.

Just thought I'd ramble...and I really didn't care for this movie at all

P.S. If anyone attempts to attack me for hating rap music saying I'm racist, I'll have you know that during my metal years my favorite guitarist was Tony MacAlpine (who is black) and the majority of the Eurodance artists I like ( E-Rotic, Ice MC, etc...) are black also. So there :-}
