My feeling is that a fair amount of the hostility directed toward Disco was based in racism. However, that doesn't explain the contempt with which Disco was held by upper income, college-educated whites (i.e. Yuppies). The same people who groveled in the presence of jazz and blues, and who revered any International music, regardless of merit, absolutely howled about Disco. My guess is that their dislike was based mostly in their own bias against middle class white culture. Much of the hostility directed toward Disco came after the movie "Staying Alive," with John Travolta, was released. At that point, Disco was becoming popular with the white middle class, and the firestorm of derision began.
That's my take on it, anyway.
